Benítez in talks with Sampdoria over vacancy

• Club's owner says he has been in contact with Benítez
• Sampdoria are looking to replace Giuseppe Iachini

Rafael Benítez is in talks with Sampdoria to become their new manager, the club's owner Riccardo Garrone revealed on Tuesday.

Sampdoria are looking to replace the coach Giuseppe Iachini this summer and the former Liverpool manager is the No1 candidate to take his place.

"There have been contacts with Benítez," Garrone said to Sky Italia. "But it's a work in progress."

Iachini took over the Genoa outfit last November and led the team to promotion to Serie A via the play-offs last month.

He is under contract with Sampdoria for another season. Benítez, meanwhile, has been out of work since being sacked by Internazionale in December 2010. Read More
